Haxby Lions 5 Cueball 1
20th September, 2009

After a shambolic first match of the season for the Lions, Trev was still fuming three weeks later. The changes were aplenty with Trev exiling three of the Lions back four to Newcastle; Dale Waddington and Stuart Baker returned from suspensions and Paul Jacobs returned from his holiday to add strength to the front line. Haxby made the early breakthrough when Peter Dransfield broke free and scored his first goal for the Lions; this jubilation was short lived as Cueball quickly equalised and that familiar stinking feeling was returning. That feeling got worse as cueball were quickly awarded a penalty, but thankfully it proved to be a turning point as new Lions Keeper Gary Dickinson saved the spot kick, a save which kicked the lions in life. Dransfield went into over drive scoring three more goals before the end of the first half. Despite the Lions also missing a penalty they went into the break leading 4-1.
Trev was slightly bemused by the Lions leading a game, an unusual occurrence, and sent his players back out with the instructions “Don’t bloody lose you idiots”. The Lions followed his instructions to the letter and held Cueball at bay; Substitutes were introduced to make sure the Haxby remained solid at the back. And with 10 minutes to go Michael Taylor latched onto a through ball and scored the Lions fifth of the game, his first goal for Haxby since his return from his F1 Racing.
A first league win of the season for the Lions and the first time the Lions have has positive goal difference since the 1992-93 season.
Next week sees the Lions make their first away appearance of the season as they head to Wheldrake to take on the Inland Revenue with both sides hoping the Lions aren’t as incompetent as in their last meeting.
