It doesn't get bigger than York's fiercest Derby - Haxby Lions vs. Wiggington Grasshoppers. So in true to Lion form they decide to have a lengthy drinking session the night before to aid preparation for this massive 'winner takes' all game.
The first half was a bit of a non event as the Lions tried to shake off their hangovers (which Wiggington were probably trying to do as well, to be fair) and little was created by either side. A couple of tasty challenges were flying about, but nothing on the scale of last seasons home game where the Referee was found rocking backwards and forwards in his changing room after the match, vowing never to come to Ethel Ward again! Luckily the referee stamped his authority on the game early, and as a result the game was played in a good spirit for the full 90 minutes (not 120 minutes that was played in last season’s fixture!).
So 0-0 at the break and our Lions manager Trev rightly handed out a bollocking to his men; informing them that after such a promising start to the season they were letting not just themselves down, but also all the good people of Haxby. So with renewed vigour we rolled ourselves up and unleashed hell on our opponents deservedly taking the lead with an awesome header from Chris Rigby after a good run and cross by Haxby's pin up centre half David Thompson (playing without his head brace this week). A second Haxby goal was soon to follow after good work by Baker, Matthews and Jacobs led to a Dale Waddington goal that maybe the Wigginton keeper should have done better with? But we’ll happily take it
A couple of scary moments for the Haxby defence but they stayed strong and got a first clean sheet since err……. answers on a post card!
Next week see’s the Lions in cup action once again as they welcome Skelton to Ethel’s.
